While researching my failures, I came across a lot more info on different ways to accomplish my goal. I will continue experimenting with the RIT dye solution, but I will also try the following experiments down the road:
1) Coat the lens using a Sharpie and then spray it with Clear Coat.
2) Use glass paint or clear plastic paint, like the type sold in plastic "stained glass" kits.
3) Use transparent hobby paint sold for use on plastic models.
4) Add food coloring to acrylic floor polish.
5) Add paint to clear polyurethane.
Hopefully, it will not take me years to get to these projects. Keep coming back for updates and photos of completed projects.
